The 2017 Songwriters Hall of Fame 48th Annual Induction and Awards Dinner was a sparkling success, as SHOF President\/CEO Linda Moran and co-chairs, Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff recognized and celebrated some of the best songwriting legends of our time. Last night, musical titans Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, Berry Gordy, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Robert Lamm & James Pankow p\/k\/a “Chicago,” Max Martin, and Shawn “JAY Z” Carter were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Honored with special awards were Alan Menken with the prestigious Johnny Mercer Award; Ed Sheeran with the Hal David Starlight Award; Pitbull with the first-ever Global Ambassador Award and Caroline Bienstock with the Abe Oleman Publisher Award.<\/p>\n

Jon Bon Jovi<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The evening kicked off with Jon Bon Jovi performing an acoustic version of his hit, \u201cIt\u2019s My Life\u201d before inducting the song\u2019s writer Max Martin, whom he called a \u201cgenius.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cassandra Wilson performed an electrifying rendition of Peggy Lee\u2019s \u201cFever\u201d before Songwriters Hall of Fame co-chairmen, Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff honored Caroline Bienstock with the Abe Oleman Publisher Award.<\/p>\n

Whoopi Goldberg<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Whoopi Goldberg took to the stage to present Alan Menken with the highest honor bestowed by the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Johnny Mercer Award. After accepting his award he sat at the piano for a beautiful medley of his classic scores including \u201cUnder The Sea,\u201d \u201cA Whole New World,\u201d \u201cBeauty and the Beast\u201d and more, which had the audience clapping and singing along.<\/p>\n

\"\"Presenter Train\u2019s Pat Monahan introduced inductees James Pankow & Robert Lamm p\/k\/a Chicago before performing their hit \u201cJust You And Me\u201d with Pankow on trombone. Prior to their induction, Lamm joined Pankow for their classic song \u201cDoes Anybody Really Know What Time It Is,\u201d before proclaiming how humbled they are to be in the company of the \u201cgreatest songwriters in modern history.\u201d<\/p>\n

Johnny Gill brought the audience to its feet with a captivating rendition of \u201cMy, My, My\u201d written by inductee Kenny \u201cBabyface\u201d Edmonds, who was inducted by Irving Azoff.<\/p>\n

Following his induction, Edmonds stated \u201cwhat a blessing it is to do something [he loves]\u201d and what an honor it is to stand in front of his heroes.<\/p>\n

Max Martin and Jon Bon Jobi<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The evening continued as past recipient, Benny Blanco took to the stage to honor friend, Ed Sheeran with the Hal David Starlight Award, which is presented to young songwriters who are making a significant impact in the music industry with their original songs. Blanco called Sheeran \u201cone of the greatest live performers he\u2019s ever seen.\u201d After a heartfelt and comical acceptance speech, Sheeran performed \u201cCastle On The Hill.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rhonda Ross Kendrick surprised her father and performed a soulful rendition of \u201cTo Be Loved\u201d before welcoming music titan Berry Gordy whom she called a \u201cguiding force,\u201d into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n

Usher<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Usher performed an exhilarating medley of \u201cGigolos Get Lonely Too,\u201d \u201cTender Love,\u201d \u201cLet\u2019s Wait Awhile\u201d and more before inducting the song\u2019s writers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis who accepted their award before performing \u201cHuman\u201d and \u201cOptimistic.\u201d<\/p>\n

A surprise congratulatory video from President Barack Obama in recognition of Shawn \u201cJAY Z\u201d Carter becoming the first-ever rapper to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame shocked the audience. Highlights from throughout the inductee\u2019s career played before Jon Platt, CEO of Warner\/ Chappell accepted the award on JAY Z\u2019s behalf.<\/p>\n

\u201cPitbull\u201d Armando Perez<\/strong><\/p>\n

The celebratory evening came to a close as actor, John Leguizamo presented Pitbull, whom he called a \u201ctrue international superstar,\u201d with the first-ever Global Ambassador Award<\/strong>, created to celebrate\u00a0a songwriter-artist whose music has true worldwide appeal, crossing genre,\u00a0cultural and national boundaries. The Cuban-American singer Pitbull, full of gratitude, spoke about the struggles and sacrifices that made him who he is today and said \u201cour music is not only powerful, it\u2019s the universal language.\u201d He then went on to perform a high-energy medley of \u201cFireball, \u201cDon\u2019t Stop the Party,\u201d \u201cGive Me Everything,\u201d and \u201cRemix,\u201d that had the audience dancing.\"\"<\/p>\n
