The flm Florence Foster Jenkins<\/em> is based on the true story of an endearing diva who became a legend when she attracted a full house at New York\u2019s Carnegie Hall, despite being a terrible singer. Stephen Frears, director of The Queen and Philomena<\/em>, teams up with Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant for his latest film.<\/p>\n

The 29th<\/sup> Tokyo International Film Festival<\/strong> event kicked off with an appearance by Festival Muse<\/em> Haru Kuroki, the popular actress who won the Silver Bear<\/em> at Berlin for Yoji Yamada\u2019s Little House<\/em> in 2014. As the red carpet guests arrived, there was particularly loud applause for Japan Now Director in Focus Shunji Iwai, My Korean Teacher<\/em> star Yesung (Super Junior), Special guest Anne Parillaud, and Francis Ng and Louis Koo from Shed Skin Papa<\/em>. Other major guests from each sections were also making appearances including Cannes Un Certain Regard Jury Prizewinner Koji Fukada, director of Harmonium; Munetaka Aoki, star of both Snow Woman<\/em>, in the Competition section, and A Woman Wavering in the Rain<\/em>, from the Asian Future Section; popular actresses Yu Aoi and Mitsuki Takahata, of Japanese Girls Never Die<\/em> and director and also actress Kiki Sugino from Snow Woman<\/em> in Competition section; this year\u2019s Animation Focus<\/em>, Mamoru Hosoda; and the casts and the three directors of the first TIFF-Japan Foundation Asian Center Coproduction series, Asian Three-Fold Mirror<\/em> 2016: Reflections, Brilliante Ma Mendoza, Isao Yukisada and Sotho Kulikar.\"tiff_aa7w0111-jpg_cmyk\"<\/p>\n

Triple Oscar winner Meryl Streep, star of the TIFF Opening Film, Florence Foster Jenkins<\/em>, and director Yoshitaka Mori, with Kenichi Matsuyama and Masahiro Higashide, stars of Closing Film Satoshi: A Move for Tomorrow<\/em>, appeared last, to rousing receptions.<\/p>\n

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe greeted the stars and delivered closing remarks to the audience, joking, \u201cThis Red Carpet is so much more exciting than the carpet in the Japanese Parliament.\u201d<\/p>\n

The prime minister also appeared at the Opening Ceremony, where he greeted the audience with wishes for the success of the festival.<\/p>\n

In remarks from the stage, Competition Jury President Beineix noted, \u201cIt is a great honor and a great privilege to preside over the jury of the Tokyo International Film Festival. Cinema is our common wealth. Movies are our contribution to freedom, cultural diversity and finally, peace. All we need is peace and harmony, and movies contribute to them in troubled times. Together with my fellow jurors, we will be looking for audacious, creative and surprising films. Let\u2019s celebrate the great big screen. Let\u2019s get together for great big dreams.\u201d<\/p>\n

Festival Muse Haru Kuroki introduced the Opening Film, Florence Foster Jenkins<\/em>, describing it as \u201can inspiring true story about the world\u2019s worst singer,\u201d and brought star Meryl Streep to the stage. Following a shrieked from the audience, Streep yelled back, \u201cI love you, too!\u201d She then said, \u201cThank you. Arigato gozaimasu. It\u2019s a great thrill to be back in Tokyo, a city that I love and love to explore. I hope you like the film very much!\u201d<\/p>\n

During the 10-day celebration, more than 200 films will be screened and there will be unique film-related events every day at the festival venues, including stage appearances, Q&A sessions and symposia featuring celebrated guests from around the world.<\/p>\n
